Homework
Given each Friday and due in the following Thursday
Reading - We expect children to read at home at least 3 times a week and that this is recorded in their school diaries. Children may read to you, you to them, they can talk about what they have read or answer questions to check they have understood.
Spelling - We will share the words we are learning in school each week and ask that the children practise regularly (little and often) on paper and online on Spelling Shed.
English Homework (given on Week 1 in the diary) - This may be exercises to practise grammar, punctuation and spelling; reading comprehension activities or projects to support Topic work.
Maths Homework (given on Week 2 in the diary) - This may be exercises to consolidate concepts being worked on in class; times tables practice (your child should know which times table is their target but should continue to practise the tables they have already learned) or other online activities.
Optional Homeworks- There are Optional Homeworks detailed at the bottom of this page for each Topic. These are entirely voluntary and to be completed at your discretion.
NB: Login details will be issued for TT Rock Stars and Spelling Shed and will be stuck in School Diaries.
Optional Homework
Year 3 Optional Homework - Autumn
Tribal Tales of Prehistoric Britain
- We know about prehistoric life from artefacts discovered by archaeologists such as food, coins, tools and jewellery. Make a time capsule about your life now for archaeologists to find in 1000 years. What clues would leave? What would it show about life today?
- Make a photo montage of prehistoric monuments. You can search for the best images online and download them to a Powerpoint or Word document. You could even visit one!
- Iron Age people were the first humans ever to grow crops such as spelt wheat, barley, rye and oats. Can you find these foods in your local supermarket. Make a table including what they are used in, prices and weights of packets. Can you find out where they are grown as well?
- Draw your own pet or local animal in the style of a prehistoric cave painting.
- Build your own prehistoric monument. It could be small or taller than you in the garden (take a photo!). What materials will you use and how will you build it?
- Create your own Celtic costume. Tartan pyjama bottoms and blankets may come in handy! You could borrow a brooch to secure your cloak or some Celt-inspired jewellery. Hair gel and blue face paint are essential if you are going into battle! Finally, strike a pose and take a photo!!
Year 3 Optional Homework - Spring
Scrumdiddlyumptious
- Keep a food diary to record the different types of food you eat over the weekend. Report back, in your opinion, whether or not your family has a balanced diet!
- Make a dish from a recipe book and take photographs to share back at school. Pay particular attention to weighing and measuring as well as temperatures and timings. Remember to wash your hands before you get going!
- Make a fabric dye from a strongly coloured fruit or vegetable. Try beetroot, carrots, tea, spinach or strawberries. Try dip-dying an old white T-shirt or handkerchief into your coloured dye... What happens?
Heroes and Villains
- Create a fact file about a real-life hero (past or present) that you find interesting. Martin Luther King, Boudicca, Rosa Parks, Amy Johnson, Neil Armstrong, Helen Keller? Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Usain Bolt, Richard Whitehead, Rebecca Adlington, Roald Dahl or someone else altogether? Who will you choose?
- Collect stories from newspapers and magazines about everyday heroes and make a clippings board. Heroic acts might include saving people or animals from danger, fighting fires or donating organs to help another person.
- Make Top Trumps cards for villains and heroes in children's stories and fairy tales. Include the name, picture, and a short description of the character on each card. Don't forget to include information on the characters' strengths, weaknesses, intelligence, fitness, and any other traits you think are appropriate and fun!
Year 3 Optional Homework - Summer
Predators
If you could be a predator for the day, what kind of predator would you be, and why? Where would you live? What features would help you hunt, catch and kill your prey?
Devise a "What am I?" quiz about predators and try it out on friends and family. How many questions did it take for them to get the right answer?
Write a set of instructions for how to care for your ultimate predator.Design your own imaginary predator. You could even join parts of existing predators using cropped images from the internet.
Mighty Metals
Go on a magnetic treasure hunt in your house. How many magnetic objects can you find? What materials are they made of?
Research some of the tasks carried out by robots. What tasks do you think robots could do in the future? What jobs would you (or your parents!) like robots to do in your house?
Search the web to find artwork made using metal and make a collage or scrapbook of downloaded images.
Find out about King Midas and his golden touch.
Find out all you can about a musical instrument made from metal. It could be orchestral or something more unusual! Create a presentation with photos and sound clips of your chosen instrument.
